When all else fails die your hair black

November 21, 2008

Andrew McMahon’s blog post from a few years ago. Andrew is the lead singer of Jacks Mannequin.

“And that’s just what I did. In a anti-climactic return to my original fake hair color, Jack’s Mannequin finally feels complete again. In some ways it’s like last year never happened. I feel like I just stepped out of the twilight zone or some weird movie where they freeze your body and revive you in some other era in history. I met a woman on an airplane today. She was the youngest person over 80 I have ever known. We spoke for a couple of hours and when it was through she told me she loved me and that I should see a shrink. Now I usually would have taken offense to such advice on most days, but in some strange way I felt a strong connection to this woman and took it for what it was worth. Nevertheless, she seemed understanding when I told her I prefer keeping my demons locked up in hopes of more conflicted songwriting. She wanted to hear one of my songs so I played her this new thing I’ve been working on. I was a little nervous as it was overtly sexual and well, she was over 80. When she finished listening she looked at me a little confused and asked “did you just sing ‘what gets you off?’” To which I nodded and apologized for my fairly racy track selection. Still, I wasn’t that shocked when she followed up with “thank god, somebody should be talking about sex these days.” It got pretty interesting from there, but the long and short of it is, sometimes people can shock the hell out of you, so don’t be shy on airplanes, or anywhere for that matter.”
