Andrew McMahon’s blog post from a few years ago. Andrew is the lead singer of Jacks Mannequin.
“And that’s just what I did. In a anti-climactic return to my original fake hair color, Jack’s Mannequin finally feels complete again. In some ways it’s like last year never happened. I feel like I just stepped out of the twilight zone or some weird movie where they freeze your body and revive you in some other era in history. I met a woman on an airplane today. She was the youngest person over 80 I have ever known. We spoke for a couple of hours and when it was through she told me she loved me and that I should see a shrink. Now I usually would have taken offense to such advice on most days, but in some strange way I felt a strong connection to this woman and took it for what it was worth. Nevertheless, she seemed understanding when I told her I prefer keeping my demons locked up in hopes of more conflicted songwriting. She wanted to hear one of my songs so I played her this new thing I’ve been working on. I was a little nervous as it was overtly sexual and well, she was over 80. When she finished listening she looked at me a little confused and asked “did you just sing ‘what gets you off?’” To which I nodded and apologized for my fairly racy track selection. Still, I wasn’t that shocked when she followed up with “thank god, somebody should be talking about sex these days.” It got pretty interesting from there, but the long and short of it is, sometimes people can shock the hell out of you, so don’t be shy on airplanes, or anywhere for that matter.”
Our friends at Party 4 a Cause are throwing another kick a- charity party! This time it’s a 90s themed!
Make sure to be there. It’s going to be a crazy crazy party!
The money will be donated to Habitat for Humanity - NYC. They are raffling off prizes through the night too.
RSVP here at on our facebook page, or our event page.
Saw Jacks Mannequin during the summer. They were either a co-headliner or an opening act for Paramore, not sure which. But either way, at first I thought their songs were kind of blah. But after listening to it a few times, it’s actually not that bad. It’s actually pretty catchy to the point where I like them.
Onto my thoughts about them. They come at a time when there happens to be a huge wave of alternative rock bands with a piano playing frontman (called piano rock) - Coldplay, The Fray, OneRepublic, and the list goes on…It’s your typical upbeat, piano-centric teem rock band. Not as alternative and dark as Coldplay’s earlier work, and definitely not as mellow and suicidal as OneRepublic, or the Fray. They have a sound similar to Something Corporate.
They’re a mediocre fun band that I would definitely pay $20 (maybe $25) to go see. I totally would break them out at a BBQ or on the juke box of your local dive bar over a game of beer pong. This music isn’t suitable for hipsters, but more the Hollister, American Eagle type.
They’re coming to NYC and are playing at Blender theater later this month (Nov. 21st, 22nd) and are completely sold out. But tickets are available on craigslist, or at your local scalper (a.k.a. StubHub).
Below is their video for the song Dark Blue. It’s a cool video. It’s a 50s styled dance marathon.
When was the last you heard someone say, “I’ll give you a call later?”
Now it’s more like, “I’ll give you a text later.”
What a nuisance…Even with the rise of iphones, people still text…If you really have the urge to send someone a message in text format, why don’t you just email them? let me get back to my bjork.
Yes, i’m still listening to bjork. I’ve officially become an 90s alternative junkie. And that’s why I’m UBER excited for this Friday’s Party of the Week - Rockin’ 90s Dance Party. It’s hosted by our friends at Party 4 a Cause.

It’s Friday, I have a report to finish and a big giant 30 oz. tub of pretzels on my desk. I’m wondering which I will finish first, the pretzels of the report. I sh-t you not, I have my money on the on this tub of salty sour dough nuggety dry goodness that i picked up from Duane Reade.
On the plus side, I just found out that it’s Kosher, as shown by the U enclosed circle and “pareve” notice on the label. sweet……
And to top it off, I’m listening to Bjork’s first album, Debut. I forgot how awesome 90s Music is.
On Sunday, I’m going to be checking out up and coming singer starlet, Alfa Garcia. Gracia has been making a nice name for herself in the NYC music scene. Coupled with her mature and intelligent lyrics, her voice, which is always full of passion and soul, really allows you not to only envision her song, but to embody it.
In her song Sundown Came, she writes/sings:
“he wakes up her up in the middle of the night
throws her blanket and takes her outside
shows her the moon when it’s facing her smile
and says, ‘remember tonight.’”
She performs on Sunday @ 8pm
The Bitter End
147 Bleecker Street (between Thompson and LaGuardia)
New York City, NY 10012
Below is Alfa Garcia performing, one of my favorites, Oreo and Better at The Five Points Show.
